Swedenborg

Emanuel Swedenborg (geboren Emanuel Swedberg, 29 January 1688 – 29 March 1772, 84) was een Zweedse wetenschapper, filosoof, theoloog, edelman, ziener en, in de ogen van sommigen, een Christelijke mysticus. Hij omschreef zichzelf als een dienaar van de Heer Jezus Christus. Hij heeft in zijn leven zo’n 50 boeken geschreven, maar is vooral bekend van zijn boek Heaven and Hell (1758).

Swedenborg leverde veel wetenschappelijke ideeen gedurende zijn leven. Tijdens zijn jeugd wilde hij elke dag een nieuw idee opleveren. Rond 1730 veranderde hij van gedachten en geloofde dat 'hogere' kennis niet iets is wat je kunt opdoen door ervaring, maar gebasserd is op intuitie. In 1745 begreep hij echter dat hem die wetenschappelijke kennis op een spontane manier door engelen werd ingefluisterd. Vanaf 1745 beschouwde hijzichzelf als een verlichte staat begon hij zijn 'ervaringen' op empirische te uiten. Daarbij bewerend dat he tended to phrase his "experiences" in empirical terms, claiming to report accurately things he had experienced on his spiritual journeys.
One of his ideas that is considered most crucial for the understanding of his theology is his notion of correspondences. But in fact, he first presented the theory of correspondences in 1744, in the first volume of Regnum Animale dealing with the human soul.
The basis of the correspondence theory is that there is a relationship between the natural ("physical"), the spiritual, and the divine worlds. The foundations of this theory can be traced to Neoplatonism and the philosopher Plotinus in particular. With the aid of this scenario, Swedenborg now interpreted the Bible in a different light, claiming that even the most apparently trivial sentences could hold a profound spiritual meaning.
Psychic accounts
Four incidents of purported psychic ability of Swedenborg exist in the literature. There are several versions of each story.

The Lord, speaking in the presence of His disciples of the consummation of the age, which is the final period of the church, says, near the end of what He foretells about its successive states in respect to love and faith:

Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven; and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He shall send forth His angels with a trumpet and a great sound; and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from the end to end of the heavens (Matt. 24:29-31).
